Ways to Identify Causes of High Blood Pressure

In many cases, high blood pressure (or hypertension) is something people live with for a long time before it's finally diagnosed. The only way to be sure is to have your blood pressure checked, as hypertension does not necessarily have warning signs. Let's look at some of the known causes of high blood pressure to help you protect yourself.

As you get older, you are more likely to have high blood pressure. Men are more at risk for high blood pressure around their mid-forties, and with women it's closer to fifty.

Hypertension is something that anyone can have, though, especially if you have risk factors such as being overweight. People in their forties or older should have their blood pressure checked frequently, but everyone should have it monitored on a regular basis. Your age, of course, is only one risk factor for high blood pressure, and you have to consider your everyday habits as well.

Unfortunately, there are many instances when the cause of high blood pressure cannot be identified. When doctors cannot find a definite cause of high blood pressure, which is actually most of the time, they call it essential hypertension.

While no one specific cause can be found when it comes to essential hypertension, there are many risk factors that can make this problem more likely. It's important to realize that the only way to know if you have high blood pressure is to have it tested frequently. Whether or not the cause of hypertension can be pinpointed, there are ways to treat and manage it.

Certain types of food can contribute to high blood pressure. It's well known that eating too much salt can be a factor, and if you've been diagnosed with hypertension it's recommended that you eat a low sodium diet. Junk food, sugar and unhealthy fats all have a bearing on blood pressure. You can control this by eating more fruit and vegetables. While diet is only one contributing factor it's an important one. As a general rule your blood pressure issue is often called a "silent killer" because it can have no symptoms and may not be apparent until something more serious like heart disease happens. Eating a healthy diet, watching your weight, checking your blood pressure regularly and using this article as a guideline as you see your doctor regularly will cut down your risk for high blood pressure.
